Another view of our cake.

This year my friend Sarah Giannobile and I decided to enter the Threadcakes contest together. We chose "Sharkquestrian" because it is such an awesome design, and we thought the overall shape would be an interesting challenge.

We wanted the cake to be pretty big so we started by baking two 12"x16" sheets of white cake. The middle section of the shark is white cake with almond flavored buttercream. We used rice krispie treats on the front and back ends of the cake which was then carved away to create the curved shape of the shark's body. We used dowels and a small cake plate to support the upper half of the cake so that the shark could be taller and support the weight of the girl figurine. The upper half of the shark's body and the tail are made of cake. The shark's head was made of rice krispie treats and supported by a peice of cardboard with a dowel holding his mouth open. We then covered the rice krispie portions with white chocolate to make them sturdier, and covered the entire cake with a layer of buttercream and blue fondant. We also covered the cake board in fondant to match the color of the shirt, as well as another board to be placed in the background for photos.
The torso of the girl's body was shaped from rice krispie treats and covered in white chocolate and fondant. We used one dowel to hold the body onto the cake and attach the head to the body. The girl's head, arms, legs and other details, as well as the shark's fins, teeth, and eyes were made of fondant. The handlebars were made by wrapping fondant around peices of floral wire and painted with an edible shimmery powder. We also painted the gun and boot details. We made blood by mixing red and black food coloring with royal icing, and painted it onto the shark's mouth and teeth with a paintbrush.

The entire cake took about 5 hours over 3 days to complete. I love how it turned out, and it was a fun challenge.
